Holy Grass Hero Exhibition

I currently have work on show in the Holy Grass Hero Exhibition at Dunnet Bay Distillers, running until the end of March. The exhibition celebrates the life of Robert Dick, who was an amateur botanist and geologist in Thurso. He is known for rediscovering the Northern Holy Grass plant, which was thought to be extinct. The grass is used to make Holy Grass Vodka at the distillery.

As a landscape painter, I found it a challenge producing work to celebrate a person. However, Dunnet Head was one of his favourite places, so it seemed appropriate to paint some of the scenery of the area around there. I have also included a view of the River Thurso, on the banks of which he is said to have rediscovered Northern Holy Grass.
