Glen Callater

Image
Glen Callater - watercolour, 25 x 36 cm Glen Callater is near Braemar, on the southern side of the Cairngorms National Park. The route through the glen forms part of Jock's Road, which has a famous place in the history of public access to land in Scotland. In the Nineteenth Century, the owner of the land in the area tried to ban all access, but there was an old drove road that had long been used by cattle herders and travellers. John 'Jock' Winter decided to fight for the right to walk this route and, with the help of the Scottish Rights of Way Society, he won his case in the highest court of the land. As a result, the Scottish Rights of Way Act was passed, and eventually the Land Reform Act of 2005, which granted the right of responsible access to most land in Scotland. www.keithtilley.co.uk
