In mediaeval times castles were sited at strategic locations. The use of gunpowder led to the development of forts and, by the time of World War II, concrete bunkers. Now the threat is from climate change, with sea-level rise and extreme weather. The old defences are no longer of any use, and they may even disappear as the coastline is gradually eroded.

Keith Tilleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04114006831583939493noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4241140077279439022.post-63170797772837698312023-11-25T22:22:00.000+00:002023-11-25T22:22:12.648+00:00Exhibition at the Thurso Art Gallery

A new exhibition began at the Thurso Art Gallery, on 17th November. The theme is 'Change':

The gallery was threatened with closure, but it was reprieved after campaigning by the Society of Caithness Artists, and especially its chairman, Ian Pearson. This exhibition is being run as a trial, to see whether the society can successfully take over the running of the gallery from the local council. Hopefully it will be well-attended.

Along the coast from Thurso Castle there is a lookout turret. I took some photographs while I was painting it, and I thought I would show them here to give an idea of my working methods.

I usually start with a big wet wash over the whole of the sheet, letting the colours run together. In this case, I have also used masking fluid to preserve some of the white areas.

Mill Theatre and Cotton Grass - first painting stage

While everything is still wet, I add more paint to some areas and lift it off from others with a semi-dry brush. I aim to finish up with an overall impression of the subject, with everything soft edged.

In the next stage I remove the masking fluid and develop the various forms, strengthening tonal values and firming up edges. The third and final stage is for adding details.

I used masking fluid for this one. For those who don't know, it's a rubbery liquid which dries to form a waterproof film. When the first washes are dry, it can be rubbed off easily to leave areas of pristine white paper.

Keith Tilleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04114006831583939493noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4241140077279439022.post-3703389610023520142023-07-30T22:07:00.003+01:002023-07-31T10:08:32.411+01:00Society of Caithness Artists Exhibition
It's time for the annual Caithness Artists show.

The hamlet of Westerdale, in Caithness. It's a quiet place now, but I think it must have been busier in the past. The nearby building used to be a post office, and there was a church, a water-mill and I think maybe a shop.

I think one of the best short walks in Caithness is along the river at Halkirk. It starts from the bridge in the centre of the village, with lovely tree-lined banks, and then becomes more open with wide views. The path rises above low cliffs and then continues by water-meadows. Further on, there is the hamlet of Gerston, with some impressive old houses. It all makes for a pleasant way to spend half an hour or so on a summer's day.
Keith Tilleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04114006831583939493noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4241140077279439022.post-60236458645593845972023-04-30T23:26:00.003+01:002023-09-03T10:45:52.316+01:00The Old Fergie

<img alt="Watercolour painting by Keith Tilley. The exhibition celebrates the life of Robert Dick, who was an amateur botanist and geologist in Thurso. He is known for rediscovering the Northern Holy Grass plant, which was thought to be extinct. The grass is used to make Holy Grass Vodka at the distillery.

As a landscape painter, I found it a challenge producing work to celebrate a person. However, Dunnet Head was one of his favourite places, so it seemed appropriate to paint some of the scenery of the area around there. I have also included a view of the River Thurso, on the banks of which he is said to have rediscovered Northern Holy Grass.
