Halkirk

"Old Cottage in Halkirk" - watercolour - 16 x 26 cm

Halkirk is the nearest village in my local area. Most of it was created in the 19th Century, around a bridge on the River Thurso. It was laid out on a grid pattern of houses, with individual plots of land. Many of the original houses have been replaced or modernised, but there are still a few old cottages, which make it possible to imagine how the village would have looked originally.

  1. Just the sort of cottages I imagine over there.
    Thanks for sharing it .

    1. Yes a typical old Scottish cottage BJ, although they are gradually being replaced with rather nondescript modern houses.

  2. Good evening Keith!... We have such stone structures in this area... all attributed to the Scottish stone masons whom first built the Rideau Canal system from Kingston to Ottawa. This scene could easily be a scene from our area.

A warm watercolour rendering... with a"homey" feel to the setting! Tilleyesque for certain!

    Good Painting!
    Warmest regards,
    Bruce

  3. Hi Bruce, how interesting that you have similar cottages there. It's fascinating how the culture has been transplanted to another country so far away.

    All the best,
    Keith

  4. What a lovely little cottage! I assume that someone lives in it?

    1. I think so, Diane, it looked as though it was being looked after.

  5. I learn so much from looking at your work Keith. Your warm natural palette, your rich strong darks, and the fresh clean application. In this one I like how you've made the distant cottage very pale so as to isolate the main subject matter, yet keep it in context. If it was possible for me to choose how to paint, this would be it!! Another stunning painting.

    1. Thanks John, I'm glad you noticed how I deliberately subdued the background.

    1. Thanks Caroline, I suppose it helped that it was a perfect gem of a cottage!
