One of the best places to find out about the Flow Country is the RSPB's 'Forsinard Flows' nature reserve. This extensive area of peat bog is the nearest we get to true wilderness here in Britain. Large parts of it have been planted with commercial forestry in the past, but the RSPB are working to clear the trees and return the bog to something like its natural state.

What a bonny painting with lovely colours and a soft misty distance. Keith, thanks for the link about Forsinard Flows it looks a lovely place. There were some nice photos on the site of the location too.

That lone bird in the foreground really adds to the vast loneliness and complete sense of wildness! Wonderful!

Thanks for telling me about that Lydie, I'd forgotten that BBC videos are not available in some countries. I've found the RSPB video that I really wanted to show, so I've changed it now. Hopefully you'll be able to see that.
ReplyDeleteThe film is wonderful, I don't have a television so it was great to see this. I am going to look into what train leaves Inverness for this location as I think that train trip would really be spectacular.

ReplyDeleteIt's the train to Thurso, Caroline. The first bit around the Cromarty Firth is a bit of a drag, but once it gets into Sutherland it is a beautiful journey. It runs very close to the coast and then loops inland a couple of times through wild scenery.
