Grey Day at Ackergill

Grey Day at Ackergill
Acrylic
15 x 20 cm

Reading an article by Frank Edwards led me to experiment a bit more with coloured painting surfaces. For this painting I used a Raw Umber ground colour. I blocked in all the really dark areas, without any under-drawing, with a transparent mix of Ultramarine and Burnt Sienna. Then I built up thicker opaque paint on top, leaving some of the ground colour showing through. I think the cool, grey painting surface suited this kind of subject very well.

Quinag

Quinag
Watercolour
25 x 36 cm

Quinag is the most northerly mountain in Assynt. It is actually a range of peaks, in the form of a forked ridge, and includes three Corbetts (mountains over 2,500 feet). The highest summit is Sail Garbh at 808 metres. This wild landscape is now protected by the John Muir Trust.
