Willy Lott's Cottage by John Constable
41 x 56 cm
Of all the books in my possession one of my favourites is one about the paintings of John Constable. It was just a cheap book from a supermarket but it is a constant source of inspiration. What interests me most is the numerous examples of Constable's oil sketches. These were often painted in front of the subject and seem to me to have more feeling than the large exhibition paintings. The brushwork is expressive and the subject is stripped down to the bare essentials, but the sketches are full of light and atmosphere. They were frequently painted on a brown-coloured paper and this shows through the rough brush-strokes. Constable painted these quick impressions nearly two hundred years ago, but they have quite a modern look to me and show how far he was ahead of his time.
